چکیده

Frederik Stjernfelt Center for Semiotics Aarhus University Aarhus, Denmark [email protected] Abstract Theses on the semiotic study of life as presented here provide a collectively formulated set of statements on what biology needs to be focused on in order to describe life as a process based on semiosis, or signaction. An aim of the biosemiotic approach is to explain how life evolves through all varieties of forms of communication and signification (including cellular adaptive behavior, animal communication, and human intellect) and to provide tools for grounding sign theories. We introduce the concept of semiotic threshold zone and analyze the concepts of semiosis, function, umwelt, and the like as the basic concepts for theoretical biology.

Thomas A. Sebeok and biology: Building biosemiotics

The paper attempts to review the impact of Thomas A. Sebeok (1920–2001) on biosemiotics, or semiotic biology, including both his work as a theoretician in the field and his activity in organising, publishing, and communicating. The major points of his work in the field of biosemiotics concern the establishing of zoosemiotics, interpretation and development of Jakob v. Uexküll’s and Heini Hedige...

A-life, Organism and Body: the semiotics of emergent levels

This paper comments upon some of the open problems in artificial life (cf. Bedeau et al 2000) from the perspective of a philosophy of biology tradition called qualitative organicism, and more specifically the emerging field of biosemiotics, the study of life processes as sign processes. Semiotics, in the sense of the pragmaticist philosopher and scientist Charles S. Peirce, is the general study...

Interactivist naturalization of biosemiotics and Peircean semeiotic

Intention is to show how the concepts of Peircean semeiotic can be transformed to interactivist ones, and what restrictions this transformation brings along to the application of Peircean concepts especially to biosemiotics. The basic interactive re-interpretation of Peircean semeiotic for biosemiotics can be done with three levels of representation. At the first level, the concept of minimal (...

Overcoming the Newtonian paradigm: the unfinished project of theoretical biology from a Schellingian perspective.

Defending Robert Rosen's claim that in every confrontation between physics and biology it is physics that has always had to give ground, it is shown that many of the most important advances in mathematics and physics over the last two centuries have followed from Schelling's demand for a new physics that could make the emergence of life intelligible. Consequently, while reductionism prevails in...

Ninth Annual International Gatherings in Biosemiotics

This contribution attempts to synthesize and expand ideas previously presented at these meetings by placing them into a wider framework at the intersection of biosemiotics and current philosophy of biology. In previous investigations I aimed mainly at exploring the connections between two special kinds of relational structures: the networks of self-referential circular loops that appear pervasi...
